INGREDIENTS

  • 1 lb. Hamburger
  • 2-8 oz. blocks cream cheese (softened to room temperature)
  • 8 oz. sour cream
  • 8 oz. mild salsa
  • 2 packets of taco seasoning mix (McCormick Original Taco Seasoning)
  • 1 head of lettuce
  • 4 medium tomatoes
  • 1 package taco cheese (cheddar-jack mix with no seasonings is best)

DIRECTIONS

Combine the cream cheese, sour cream, salsa and one packet of taco seasoning mix. Mix until creamy. Spread into 9” x 13” casserole dish (or throwaway rectangular cake pan).

Cook hamburger in frying pan breaking apart with spatula so meat looks “crumbled.” Drain as much grease as possible from pan without losing the meat (usually about 1 tablespoon of grease will remain), place frying pan back on stove, add one packet of taco seasoning mix and coat hamburger with seasoning using burner on high (this should only take about 1 minute). Spread hamburger mixture on top of base.

Chop lettuce and spread over hamburger. Dice tomatoes and spread over lettuce. Top with taco cheese. Serve with Tostitos Round Chips or Tostitos Scoops.

Sliced black olives and/or sliced jalapenos may be added. If you prefer more “kick,” you can also use a “hotter” salsa and/or taco seasoning mix.

Special note: My family does not like the base real thick so I split the base mixture in half and spread it into 2-9” X 13” thowaway cake pans. I increase the hamburger to 2 lbs., but I do not increase the amount of seasoning mix used. You will also need some extra cheese so you should purchase two bags to be on the safe side. For anyone that does not really like raw tomatoes, by making the two pans you can make one with tomatoes and one without.
